Reformer Pilates uses the springs and pulleys to guide … and assist you in the exercizes. It’s amazing rehab for people with scoliosis, fibromyalgia (and) arthritis. It is extremely effective (but at the same time is) very gentle and safe. Whereas in Mat Pilates you use your … weight as resistance, on equipment you have the springs and pulleys to help guide you. It focuses on the same thing that Mat Pilates focuses on: control, balance, and strengthening you from the inside out.
You have the springs and the pulleys to assist you, so finding your core and your balance is easier. A lot of people find it easier to use the springs and pulleys as resistance instead of their own body weight. It is a gentler form of Pilates (with much of the same results). It can be extremely challenging once you get to level 4. EXTREMELY!
Mat Pilates is a form of exercise that is done on the floor. It utilizes the core (which helps with stability and teaches you control), lengthens your muscles and strengthens you from the inside out. It focuses on internal obliques, stablizers in your spine … and is very flowing, it’s a non stop (work out). It targets every single muscle in your body … and aligns muscles and joints. (It focuses on) core control. Joseph Pilates called it ‘contrology’. You teach your mind to control your body instead of your body controlling your mind.
(The Mat is) a very small piece of equipment, and a very inexpensive piece of equipment, and you can take it with you anywhere you go. (Mat Pilates is) done in a group setting, so you have the camaraderie of other people in the class. Mat Pilates can get you very long, lean and strong very quickly.
